A 1960s ranch where the kitchen was a closed box next to a sunken den. One header later it is a single room with a 48 inch range and a working scullery out of sight.

The brief
What the owners actually asked for
The clients cook for 20 people several times a year and wanted the mess to happen somewhere other than the room everyone stands in.
The existing bearing wall carried a point load from the roof structure, so the removal needed an engineered beam and a new path down to the foundation.
Scope of work
- Engineered flush beam and two new point load paths to the crawlspace footings
- 48 inch dual fuel range with a 1200 CFM hood and a powered makeup air damper
- Twin dishwashers, one in the island and one in the scullery
- Scullery with a second sink, open shelving and a beverage center
- Panel upgrade to 200 amp with new dedicated circuits
The result
What changed day to day
- The scullery absorbs the prep and the dirty dishes, so the main room stays presentable during a party.
- Makeup air was designed in from day one, which kept the hood from pulling the fireplace backwards.
- The island seam is book-matched and sits under the sink run where it is least visible.
We hosted 22 people six weeks after they finished and the kitchen never looked like a kitchen mid-party.
