The brief
What the owners actually asked for
The clients did not want to extend the house. They wanted the existing room to stop fighting them, and they wanted the new oak floor to disappear into the original 1924 oak.
The old layout put the fridge in the doorway and the range on an interior wall with a recirculating hood that did nothing.
Scope of work
- Range relocated to the exterior wall with a properly ducted 400 CFM hood
- Kitchen circuits rewired, abandoned knob and tube removed from the ceiling cavity
- New white oak flooring woven into the original strip oak at three doorways
- Full-height pantry wall with pull-out shelving and an appliance garage
- Walnut bar top on the peninsula, oiled rather than varnished
The result
What changed day to day
- The floor weave is invisible from the hallway, which is the detail the owners mention first.
- The pantry wall replaced a corner cabinet nobody could reach, adding roughly 40 percent more usable storage.
- Venting the hood properly ended the smoke alarm problem they had lived with for eleven years.
The floor seam is somewhere in that doorway and I still cannot find it. That alone was worth the extra week.
